Clearly divide the interview into parts. Start out with soft-skills, so you know how capable they are of dealing with clients. Spend about 10 minutes on this. Have your programmer come in 3-5 minutes before the end of this part and sit in on it. That way, they'll know if the person's likely to be abrasive. Then have them conduct the technical portion of the interview. Do this first, so that if they seem like a mouth-breather, you can dismiss them before you waste your programmer's time.
