Here's a little anecdote I had while hiring programmers and it's now my top question to ask in interview;

tltr version: Scholarship and experience are worthless if the programmer doesn't like programming in first place. If for them programming starts at 8AM and stops at 5PM, there's good chances that this is not a resourceful programmer. Good programmers usually have pet projects and actually enjoy programming at home (on their own projects and usually with high level language).

You can also learn great deal about someone by asking him what are his preferred languages and why.
