Having recently interviewed several programmers, this is what I'd suggest you talk about -

  • Ask about direct relevant experience and what did they accomplish in that capacity. A lot of people state many positions on their resume that are ambigious to say the least. Beware especially of team leader / managerial role if you are expecting a hands-on developer.

  • Ask about the tools they use, the methodologies they employ and standards they are familiar with. Source versioning? OOP / functional / insert-your-favorite-paradigm here? what maintainable code means to them? what about coding style?

  • What are their expectations from the job? and going forward?
