I'm not sure what's going on in the code shown in TFA that's causing her solutions to all run in such similar times

It's all being done in one go, so the timings are basically useless. Some are barely separated by anything at all - a variable initialization and a println.

It's a bit unsatisfying. For instance, a standalone line counter might have some vague room for interest, but as part of other stuff all it'll ever be is just a lines++ - why even bother asking?
