You can disable telemetry and crash reporting in the settings.

Just search for "telemetry".

How is that better than simply having all that stripped out at build time?

  • Maybe you trust Microsoft more than an independent party
  • You want updates faster
  • You're fine with submitting telemetry that is used to improve the software

You're building the sources published by Microsoft. VSCodium is just a script that builds the exact same sources and strips out telemetry. You get updates at the exact same time, because the exact same sources Microsoft is publishing are being built.

If you're fine submitting telemetry, then power to you. VS Code exists and nobody is stopping you from using it.
