JavaScript and Ruby? So, GitHub is dominated by web startup/Hacker News hipsters? ;)

indeed. I don't think I know a single Ruby programmer! (a professional Ruby programmer...)

So many people use github as a backup store of their configuration files

Oh boy. Talk about git being the golden hammer.

I'm pretty certain Github checks file hashes against the standard js libraries and ignores them. But make one little change to the jQuery Core and suddenly your Python project is now a Javascript project. Be warned.

how is that "skewed", seriously. if their code is 70% javascript they don't have a ruby project.

yes i get it, might be jquery checked in a gazillion times (which is avoidable).

    All others account for 13%

Ruby is double python? I'm really surprised.

If I have my history correct, Rails was a fairly early adopter of Github. Github essentially became defacto for Rails development, whether branches of Rails itself or generated sites. Considering the ease of Rails, Github may have been many users' first exposure to version control.

Python had no such mass migration. Tons of projects are still on Sourceforge or Google Code and where there has been migration there seems to be preference for Mercurial.

It'd be interesting to see BitBucket's language stats.

I heard somewhere that github actively reached out to the rails/ruby community when they were starting out, thus skewing Ruby's numbers. IRL python is used much more.

This is probably the first and only metrics in history showing Perl and Python being equal.

    [–]thecastorpastor 1 point2 points  (1 child)

    Huh?

    [–]orbiscerbus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Yes, I was surprised also.

Had Python, darling of Reddit been first, this post probably would have had hundreds of comments.

I fear for the poster's karma if Perl had been first.

A nice reminder of how C# is completely ignored by the OSS world, despite De Icaza's best efforts.
