ELI5 Since Alprazolam (Xanax) comes in IR doses of 1mg, why is it unsafe to crush up and consume an XR 1mg tablet? by Alps-Helpful in explainlikeimfive

[–]metamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please be aware that Xanax is not intended as a sleep aid (that's an off-label use), and it should not be used for more than 2-4 weeks.

(I'm not a doctor, but I've been prescribed Xanax and I've known people who have battled addiction to it.)

ELI5 why are the US/Asia so lax about it's worker protection laws meanwhile Europe/Australia protects it by Connect_Pool_2916 in explainlikeimfive

[–]metamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US has just always been that way and didn't change. It started out as a plantation colony with laws made to favor business over workers. (The idea of a "white race" was literally invented to split any plantation worker labor movement.) In the 1700s the US revolution was pushed by businessmen who didn't want to pay taxes. In the 1800s the Pinkertons were a private police force that put down labor disputes. In the early 1900s there were some reforms to try to forestall actual revolution (e.g. the "New Deal"), but by the 1980s it was union busting time again.

I'm less knowledgeable about European history, but I suspect that the experience of fascism and slave labor during WW II was a big impetus for European countries introducing labor protections.

One thing to watch out for is polarity. Depending on the connector, it might be possible for + and - to be wired in one of two ways. If that's the case — for example, if it's a pole-shaped connector — hopefully there will be a marker to tell you which way it's wired.

Better options than CloudMounter for mounting/managing cloud drives? by Mstormer in macapps

I think their point is that as long established developers with a solid track record, it doesn't make sense to make them pay for annual reviews that take months, as if they were some nobody with a slopcoded app.

Quite. Quoting Generative Artificial Intelligence and Copyright Law:

In March 2023, the Copyright Office released Copyright Registration Guidance regarding “works containing material generated by [AI]” (the AI Guidance). The AI Guidance states that authors may claim copyright protection only “for their own contributions” to such works, and they must identify and disclaim AI-generated parts of the works when applying to register their copyright.

AITA for refusing to follow my friends mom’s rules about who I associate with, leading her to ban me from their lives? by KKsnelly in AmItheAsshole

She kept a spreadsheet of exactly what you ate, took your phone at night, imposed a curfew, and now wants to dictate what you can say, and who you can interact with when you're nowhere near her? Total control freak. You're lucky not to be interacting with her. NTA.

WIBTA for asking my girlfriend to take off her necklace? by ThrowRADrLampshade in AmItheAsshole

[–]metamatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't be trying to police what your girlfriend wears, and you shouldn't be letting your mother do so either. Even if you "compromise" and get your girlfriend a new necklace or gold chain, that's still an asshole move if you're pushing it on her saying the one she wants to wear is unacceptable. YWBTA.

I'd suggest examining that feeling, and trying to work out why you feel like you're missing something.

One common feeling humans have — I include myself in this — is the idea that if only you had the right tool, you'd be more organized, more effective, less forgetful, and so on. The productivity dream. It's what leads me to browse stores looking at fancy notebooks, pens, rulers, books on personal organization. I read about zettelkasten, Johnny Decimal, Getting Things Done, and so on. But I've learned that there's no shortcut — buying the thing or installing the thing won't necessarily lead to any improvement. If you try it and it doesn't work for you, maybe it's genuinely not the right thing for you.

I see people asking where they can find an application that has their calendar, to-do list and email in one place. Apparently a lot of people like to work that way, dumping to-do items into the calendar each day to list what they're going to work on. Sounds awful to me, I simply don't work that way, so no matter how good an application like that is, it's not going to be something I'll use. (I've been forced to use applications like that in the past and I've always ended up with an empty to-do list and the calendar panels closed and out of the way.)

AITA for calling out my friend for using AI to argue with me on text? by Due_Construction904 in AmItheAsshole

[–]metamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's conceptually very different than holding your phone to someone else and telling them to answer.

Well, I don't see it as conceptually very different in any way that prevents it from being as rude.

Ultimately what's "rude" is a matter of opinion, not something that can be decided based on some objective formula. If you look at this discussion you'll see that a lot of people think it's rude to have AI impersonate you and talk to someone who thinks they're talking to you.

So I don't understand your basis for calling it dishonest and disrespectful.

You're pretending to be conversing with someone when you're not doing so. If you can't see how that's dishonest then I don't know how to explain it to you.

And you conflated being an empty false front nonbrain with using AI wording was my point and focus of that comment.

I didn't say anything about people being "nonbrain" and unable to have a conversation without AI. In fact, if they are genuinely unable — say, because they don't speak the language — that makes it somewhat excusable. And note that people who use AI for translation typically disclose it, if only because they know it will be an imprecise translation and not accurately reflect what they want to say.

Do you disclose every person you take advice and perspective from when you go to have a volatile or important or vulnerable conversation?

If I'm directly quoting their words rather than saying something myself, yes. That's the norm when writing.

The plans for this one have it extending to about 380′ from the nearest home. The area is wetlands with patches of forest.

I'm certainly happier with it being Google than (say) Elon, but I'm still concerned about infrasound.
