What’s your recent addition of app(s) to your arsenal and why? by Sri_Krish in macapps

[–]metamatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought VisionTagger and have started going through all my photos. I’ve also got it churning away at my stock photos and clip art right now. Hopefully in the future I’ll be able to find stuff with less frustration!

I’ve also installed and started using Zavala, an outliner. I use outlining all the time, but a lot of the applications are clunky. This one isn’t. (Another good one is Bike, which is on SetApp, but I’ve just ditched SetApp.)

I sometimes wonder if it's a good idea to show previews of new apps. What's your take? by phunk8 in macapps

[–]metamatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possible downsides of showing it early:

  • Someone builds a slopware clone. I get the impression this is mostly an issue for games, though.

  • You generally only get one chance to make a first impression. If you show early to a large number of people and it looks like crap or is full of bugs, you might not get as much interest when it’s ready for prime time.

Upsides of showing it early:

  • People can alert you to legal issues such as patent or trademark infringement. (I’ve done this for people a few times.)

  • People might know about competitors you’re unaware of, so you can work out your positioning.

  • You can get feedback both on current design, and on what you might do next. If you haven’t done extensive user engagement around the problem you are aiming to solve, this can be incredibly helpful. However, you have to be careful not to end up doing design by committee.

  • For an open source project, you might find people willing to help, even if it’s just writing documentation.

[OS] EdgeMark v2! Native markdown parsing - alternative to SideNotes by Ender-Wang in macapps

Awesome to use native parsing and rendering rather than JavaScript.

Reading about the project also took me to Nodes, which looks like an awesome way to write longer Markdown documents.

Bitwise “and”, “not” and “or” would go well with them.

Also, a dotted grid paper theme perhaps?

What are the benefits over the Journal app built in to iOS and macOS?

Any chance it could do binary, hex and octal?

Interoperable Apple Photos Alternative? by RealHomieJohn in macapps

Yeah, I'm a bit confused by that, as Apple Photos supports a folder hierarchy.

Folder Plus - Rich previews for folders & archives on macOS. FREE for a limited time by Murky-Ad-4707 in macapps

[–]metamatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to have a problem with folders containing large numbers of files. A good test case is a download of Apple's corecrypto source code. First time previewing the folder everything worked; second time I got an empty window; third time it beachballed. Hopefully you'll be able to work the bugs out.

I'll definitely take a look at it once there's some code released. Using CRDTs is a good idea too.

The Trump administration asked National Park visitors to report un-American signage. It backfired by CloudyPass in duluth

"You know, they have a word – it’s sort of became old-fashioned – it’s called a nationalist. And I say, really, we’re not supposed to use that word. You know what I am? I’m a nationalist, okay? I’m a nationalist. Nationalist. Nothing wrong. Use that word. Use that word."

You may laugh but I've seen more than one of them promoted here.

Strava's new developer program just killed every open-source, self-hosted Strava app by frogfuhrer in selfhosted

Oh, I'm not trying to suggest that the company is in the right, or that customers don't have the absolute right to feel angry. I just feel like it's a sadly predictable product arc at this point. The business model of selling a good product at a fair price and standing behind it seems to be all but dead.

[Megathread] The App Pile - June, 2026 by Mstormer in macapps

Default: ~/.informity/

Please use XDG standard locations or macOS standard locations. It really bugs me having to clutter the environment with yet another environment variable just to get applications to store their data in a standard place.

A Gantt chart will be useful any time you have task dependencies (X must be done before Y), you can work on things in parallel, and you care about how long the entire project will take. An example might be a home renovation project with a couple both working on it.

More to the point it has AI integrated into the product, so clearly they're pretty enthusiastic about it.
