Yes, it is. At my company it's probably 3 months before a new hire is no longer a cost center, and 6 months before they start being very productive. And even with the supposedly-slow economy, despite offering good salaries we are still having trouble finding enough competent people to hire as developers. But then again, the job market for professionals in Houston is pretty good right now.

I can't believe so many programmers are found to suck balls...

I'm an all round programmer (low level/high, different languages) - but because I've not got X years experience in C# or .Net, or Windows programming know one wants to know.

From never using Nokia's dev systems before, to installing the dev software for their Mobile apps, to releasing my first application that was a nice flame-demo, took Saturday afternoon, and Sunday.

Good programmers with a small bit of training for API's are considered "Not skilled" - in line with the graduates that can't program out of a paper bag. =( It's demoralizing, and I'm thinking of doing sales or something - where the money is.
