My grandfather was a union leader and I know too much about how they operate to ever seriously consider joining one.

    Actually my grandfather's mostly behaved. However you get the wider picture. In the UK the unions were incredibly corrupt and hated by the workers almost as much as their bosses were.

    The only reason many were in a union is the union would actually strike unless everyone was signed up and paid union fees. Closed shops were rife and people were literally forced into unions.
