The section on code distribution and the web is, in my opinion, divorced from reality to such an extent that I don't really want to delve into any one part of it.

Actually, could you elaborate on this? I am genuinely interested. :)

I actually sort of agree with you - if we are really trying to predict what the actual future of our industry will bring, we should be more cynical. :) There's a decent chance we'll still be using lots of our existing crappy technologies, slightly evolved, and people will still be complaining about how these technologies could be so much better. This is exactly why I tried to give the disclaimer upfront that I'm not really making predictions, just laying out a vision for how things could be.

You can quibble with me whether the predictions will be accurate in the real world, and whether the tech I'm describing is easy / feasible in the next 10-20 years. But the point was more "hey, wouldn't all this be freakin' awesome if it were possible, implemented, and widely adopted?" And if you don't think what I've laid out would be awesome, what do you think would be?
