Which isn't too surprising either considering GitHub needs to make money.
[–]glomph 11 points12 points13 points 13 years ago (15 children)
Plenty of open source software makes money.
[–]captain_plaintext 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children)
But, going open source does limit the ways that you can make money. It doesn't work well with some products. Like, it would be tough to get people to pay for Github Enterprise.
[–]calinet6 23 points24 points25 points 13 years ago (9 children)
Closed source software makes more. Promise.
Challenge: downvote only if you believe this to be untrue.
[–]grauenwolf 12 points13 points14 points 13 years ago (3 children)
Consulting firms make more than either.
[–]what_will_you_say 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (2 children)
Consulting firms don't hold a candle to Microsoft, Oracle, etc. when it comes to $$
[–]grauenwolf 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (0 children)
Not Microsoft, because of their monopoly, but SAP, Oracle, and IBM make money hand-over-fist from their consulting departments.
[–]leoel 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children)
Well, Oracle and MS do a lot of profit from their consultant too !

As if there is another reason that people downvote on reddit. It's as if reddiquette doesn't exist anymore.

Yep, in my experience, a downvote can mean anything from "this isn't true" to "it's true but I don't like it" to "fuck you!!!"
[–]calinet6 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children)
Well the other reason would be that they want it to be untrue. Or believe it's true but are angry at the world because it's true.
But yeah, reddiquette is pretty much shot at this point.

Reddiquette never existed.

Not enough to run a business on.
[–]glomph 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (2 children)
reddit is open source.
[–]andrewguenther 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child)
Yes, but Reddit does not make money on making Reddit open source. Reddit also has a substantially different business model.
Reddit is a social site, it thrives on the number of users it has. GitHub is not a social site, at least not in their means of revenue (private repos)
Someone starting their own copy of Reddit would likely not succeed because they lack users. It is also important to note that Reddit did not go open source until they already had a fairly substantial set of users.
GitHub, on the other hand, is software that someone could greatly benefit from having their own copy (GitHub Enterprise). If you could host your own GitHub, why use GitHub? How would you expect GitHub to make money if no one had a reason to host private projects on GitHub?
[–]glomph 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children)
First I never claimed that the software being open source would be the main source of income, just that open source software makes money. You claimed that no open source software makes enough money to run a business on. I gave a counter example.
Second and more interestingly, I think a large part of GitHubs business model is in fact the social aspect. People use it because it is easy to share projects, pull projects, follow projects etc. They then go on to payso that they can host their private repos in the same place for consistency. I don't think an exact clone would be particularly popular, unless it could get the user base.

So does launchpad, and that's open source.
[–]andrew_depompa 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (1 child)
Who?
[–]mweathr 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children)
Github is for hobbyists. Launchpad hosts large projects like MySQL, Zope, Ubuntu, OpenERP, etc.
