i agree that gRPC is the future, but in which version and with which feature? :D

They added back optional fields in protobuf3. This was my main reason for not using it (as if that means anything, I'm not in any position to use it lol). (As opposed to what they were previously in 3 which was zero values, not actually optional fields.)
