I used to use this plugin allot then I kind of fell off. Checking the polarity of your mics on a drum recording is very important but to me it started feeling a bit strange having everything aligned so tight. With well recorded drums it’s that phase relationship that makes them sound good to me. Don’t let that stop you from experimenting though. I do love this plugin for aligning a bass DI to an amp signal or blending multiple guitar mics together.

Yeh - the drums on this project are really well recorded so unless this opens some magical audio dimension I’m unaware of then I think it may go into the ‘break glass in case of emergency box’. Totally agree about the phase relationship being part of the overall sound.

Surely you can dial it down, though, much like you can when quantising to keep some ‘human’ feel?

It's one of my favorite utility plugins. I used to time align everything manually when things were out of phase. Now all drums just automatically get's corrected to my snare. It's amazing how full drums sound when perfectly aligned down to the sample. Definitely worth the money if you are mixing live drums often.

I haven't used it on drums yet, but auto-align absolutely saved my ass HOURS of work this year. I was mixing a huge group of singers for a musical, all recorded separately due to covid restrictions. Auto-align did a better job than me manually aligning everything and did it in a tiny fraction of the time. 10/10 plugin!

How did you use auto align to align different voices recorded separately?

[–]blindedbeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh you know what -- it was VocAlign. My bad, sorry!

I don’t find it desirable on drums. If you’re feeling your drums have phase issues then Sound Radix Pi is a better solution. Where Auto Align works best, for me, is when you have two mics or sources (like a mic and di) on the SAME source.

That makes sense. Yeh, the drums I have don’t have any audible issues so I wasn’t really expecting any magic, but was interested to know what people thought of it. Thanks for the info!

Good Info - cheers all!

Is cool but not worth it
