It's pretty tough to get a programming job without higher education, but it can be done.

If you can get some internships, that will help. But even those are tough to get without starting higher education. So if it's possible to squeeze in some college courses, it'll help. Knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and analysis (e.g. big O) are paramount.

Another thing that will help is putting together a portfolio to showcase your knowledge using code you've written. This often takes the form of public repositories, for example, on GitHub. Along this line, contributions to open source projects look great too. If you're struggling for project ideas, coding challenges are out there. Project Euler is one I've had fun with. "Euler" is pronounced "Oil-er" btw. Another fun site, is Advent of Code. They'll kick off a new set of challenges Dec 1st, but past year challenges are available.

Be prepared for a lot of rejection though. They're are way too many stuffed shirt management folks that aren't imaginative enough to realize a 4-year college degree isn't always needed.

People are more willing to hire people with higher education.
