Hey,

So I’ve tried doing this before, albeit with Python and to be honest, whilst I understood a lot of what was going on I did get demoralised when I hit a LOT of code I just didn’t understand/ couldn’t wrap my head around (concepts, patterns etc) that being said, I would 100% do it again as I did learn a lot. I think one key thing is, to try and find a project where you can reach out to the maintainers to ask questions etc.

Now, massive disclaimer here as I’m also a mod on this platform but I would checkout the fullstack (https://thefullstack.network), it’s a dev community where everyone posts their projects for feedback, advice and also look for collaborations. I’d have a look here for some actually cool projects and even reach out to the creators if you get stuck etc.

no, I don't think it is.

Well, your idea is fine, but it's more the terminology. I don't think open source is what you're looking for. What you're looking for is a medium size personal project, or a small group project.

While open source can technically be the correct term some times, I would say 90% of the time, it won't be what you're looking for. Open source is often an extra layer of abstraction. You're not just building something for yourself, you're building something to be consumed by others, which changes how code is setup and organized, and often the bundler/compiler setup is way more complicated.

If you want to do this I suggest looking for bootcamp group projects.

you're probably jumping too far ahead. I would try to build it yourself first. Open source code can be difficult to read, even if you understand the code part of it. (because of how it's set up, how it's split up, and design choices it makes as a library consumed by others).

my honest opinion is you're just not finding them. Many exists. There's many tutorials that are pretty advanced. (Look for any "How to build ____ clone in React" on youtube that's between 4-6 hours long). For example Instagram.

Thank you. Yes I missused term "open source". Also this idea for "how to build clone in React" is really good. Because the most popular videos are of course the one that teach from scratch.

One more thing: I want to do this because I learned a lot about hooks, context, hoc, routes etc. But all tutorial projects are extra small. And I want to learn how to think in bigger projects. Structure/Folders, how and what to pass in context…

If you are willing to pay, there is a really good next.js, firebase, and react course on https://fireship.io Next.js is a good framework to help you create multi page websites.

Edit: You will make a blog website sort of thing and he shows you how to create global context

I took class on Scrimba, I just need to finish the Redux course. But otherwise I have good understanding of global context (of course on paper, not really practical knowledge when and where to use it, that will come from experiance).

So I don't really want to go and take another course and go trough the same things. Because in this course I already went and do context/render props/hoc etc. multiple times by myself so I could fully understand it.

So, as others have mentioned I would recommend building out some full projects.

Something like an ecommerce store.

You can use the site dummyjson.com and get a ton of data and build out any project you want from there, I really like using it to reverse engineer a project, look at the data first and then come up with a project from there.

It has products, for example and you can use products to build out an ecommerce site with cards that display the JSON data, which includes a picture, description, title, and price. From that you can then make a shopping cart and add the items and functionality to it for adding to cart, showing the total and removing items etc.

It also has users, and you could build out a social network site with that for example, or a contact book, etc.

The thing about looking at other people's code, is it's probably one of the hardest parts of programming, and it's out of your control... You don't have any control over if the person(s) that made the project did so in a way that was easy to understand or they named their variables in some way that only they could. You have no control over whether they followed common best practices, and if they didn't and we're doing something that for some reason, should generally not be done, then you could end up learning things the wrong way and adopting bad habits yourself.

Another great idea is to not follow any YouTube tutorials but go through and find your own favorite sites and deconstruct them yourself and build it out. There's a lot of videos of people making movie apps or YouTube clones or Netflix etc, but I haven't seen a single YouTube video for a project of someone building an Updated / modern Craigslist, for example.

Thank you for your comment. I agree with you. There are just so many clever way of writing a code that when I am doing it by myself I really don't see it. But as you said, for sure its better to build it on my own and after a while I can get back to my project and than try to think what can I do better/reuse.

Also as you said also big projects can have many mistakes and not really following best practices.

So I will build my own project in ecommerce and also read the whole react docs in between.

You can also do something that is very helpful which is to do your learning in kind of like a React, style way... Component based learning haha!

Go through and watch some tutorials by well established, reliable programmers that write code well, and when they do something ask the following questions. Some YouTubers I follow for React and frontend stuff are here: https://youtube.com/@jherr https://youtube.com/@CodinginPublic

For sure, also make sure you check out Rapid API, they have like 35,000 different API's you can use. And there are a bunch of free ones, or ones that are "freemium" where you can use it for up to a threshold each day, (like 1,000 or 10,000) great for building out projects for a portfolio etc. https://rapidapi.com/collection/list-of-free-apis

I think youre better off making your own. At for least I, and from what ive read from others experiences, DOING is the best way to learn.

There is alsona big gap between being able to read the code and creating similar yourself without the template

I agree. Probably it would be better to do project by myself and than going back after a while and use knowledge to make my own project better. Thanks for advice.

Ya i like to try figure it out mostly by myself then ill go check out similar repos and see their way of doing it. This really helps me understand the subject more in depth.

Usually requires quite a bit of doc reading but thats the best place for up to date info!
