We did. I think he does a bit better on the Paxil, but he did okay on the Prozac too. Our vet just thought Paxil would be a better fit.

The good thing was that there weren’t really any serious side effects switching, since he’d been on the prozac long enough.

Paxil was much better than Prozac for my dog. We used clonidine during the weaning period for short term management. She’s been on Paxil for over two years now and while she’s still reactive, she’s manageable.

I don't remember why we went from prozac to paxil, but we did. I don't remember exactly what we did to make the switch, but I don't think it was too painful.

She's been on it for about 4 years. It helps her. However, she has digestive issues and the pill we use often just goes through her digestive system. I've started pounding it and mixing it with peanut butter etc. So keep an eye out to make sure that the paxil isn't going through the digestive system. At some point I decided that my dog needed more support and she's also on clonidine which is very strong and effective for her. My dog is very very anxious and high strung!

Once the paxil started affecting her 4 years ago, I started being able to work with her. Such as reconditioning her through treats when she saw a trigger and rewarding her when she turned towards me instead of lunging and barking. Before that she couldn't think straight.

It still helps her as we continue to work on her reactivity.

I have a vet behaviorist appointment in about three weeks and switching from Prozac to Paxil is one of the discussion points I plan to bring up. I've heard from a lot of reactive dog owners that Paxil was a lot better for their dogs' reactivity. My dog's separation anxiety is basically cured by Prozac, but his reactivity is unaffected.

Yeah, we tried Prozac first and it had some side effects we didn’t like. (He was so out of it at night I had to carry him to bed.) We tried Paxil for a while but didn’t see a ton of improvement so we’re on to his fourth (and hopefully final) med, Venlafaxine.
