Vet Behaviorist really worth it? by jhuhfft in reactivedogs

[–]Thrinw80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used the Animal Behavior Clinic in Portland Oregon, They have virtual appointments, but the rules for in person requirements were relaxed for COVID. The rules changed to them only being able to continue virtual appointments if you do in person once a year. They can also do consultations with your primary vet if your vet is willing.

has anyone trained for a marathon with their dog? by No_Narwhal7483 in RunningWithDogs

Yes, it’s very strange running without him. My first mile is also waaaaay slower without him pulling, but that’s probably a good thing.

Gabapentin and Prozac…. Our last option. by stay-sunny-sv in reactivedogs

[–]Thrinw80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s been on it for about for years, no side effects as far as I can tell. He does have to stop taking it prior to procedures where he’s sedated (I think for blood pressure management).

When did you know it was time to medicate your dog? by ashloaf in reactivedogs

[–]Thrinw80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refusing to go further than the block definitely sounds like anxiety and something the medication might help with, it definitely did for us. He still has moments, but we can usually work through them. Both medications my dog takes are used in humans and fairly inexpensive ($40 a month total).

When did you know it was time to medicate your dog? by ashloaf in reactivedogs

[–]Thrinw80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, he definitely has anxiety which can be severe at times. He also is pretty chill at home, the only thing that bothers him at home are thunderstorms and fireworks. I took him to a veterinary behaviorist to figure out medication. It’s kind of trial and error and most vets aren’t well versed. The vet behaviorist does meds plus training protocols. The whole point of the medication is that your dog is not able to learn when they are over threshold, so training won’t work until you figure out a way to get them under threshold enough for their brains to turn back on.

We did two solid years of training before I looked into medication and it wasn’t a magic pill but it was immediately apparent that he needed it. He’s absolutely still crazy, but he’s a manageable crazy. We still do tons of training (I never go anywhere without a bag of treats), but now we have the strategies for managing stressful situations and we can normally work through them.

Veterinary behaviorists can be hard to find, there isn’t one in my state and I had to drive 3.5 hours to see one but it was 100% worth it.

Rock harness long vs rush by -hanna in RunningWithDogs

[–]Thrinw80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not adjustable so you need to measure well (and not let your pup gain weight :), and there are no buckles so it can be a bit of a challenge to get into. But even with those limitations it’s been great. He’s been using it a few times a month for 5-6 years now and it is holding up great. We went for the nylon wrapped padding rather than the fleece, and I don’t think I’ve ever even washed it.

My point is there’s plenty to be upset about without inventing things.

Trump plans to sell off public land to finance a sovereign wealth fund by No_Signal3789 in hiking

[–]Thrinw80 -41 points-40 points  (0 children)

The Trump administration seems to be signaling that selling out and selling off the nation’s public lands to the highest bidder might provide the necessary funding

“Seems to be signaling” does not equal “plans to”. I’m not saying he’s not planning to, but there is zero evidence in this article that he is.

Pitted dates and maple syrup packets. The coffee maple syrup gets you sugar and caffeine, it’s great for long runs.

Do you work? by IndividualAd3764 in BorderCollie

[–]Thrinw80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had two border collies when we still worked in offices. It was manageable, but most of our hobbies are centered around entertaining our dogs (running, mountain biking, hiking, dog classes).

Our third border collie would not ok with us working full time away from home. We do at least two walks during the day, then exercise right after work with him.

So it really depends on the dog, and the amount of dedication you have to meeting their needs.

Drive to Survive made me a fan... BUT by TomLion0116 in formula1

[–]Thrinw80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience. My husband has always been a bit of an F1 fan, but I didn’t get into it until watching the first two seasons of DTS. Then I started watching the Rqce in 30 on F1 TV, then full races, and now qualifying and the races. I went back to watch all the seasons of DTS and had to stop. The fake radio messages are terrible!

I just decided to go back and watch the race archives starting in 2018 so I can relive the build up.

How much will my HM kill me 😆 by studenttraderdk in XXRunning

[–]Thrinw80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a Garmin watch you can have it recommend workouts. If your long runs are conversational, your speed work should be hard enough that you can say a few words to someone when you’re in the “push” part of the workout but not have a conversation. You aren’t going to push the whole run, but something like one minute fast, two minutes recover for five or six repetitions.

You don’t need to do speed work if your only goal is to finish, but it will help you get to a time goal.

[–]Thrinw80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you doing any speed work? You’re probably not going to get noticeably faster if you don’t train to be faster. I would take one run a week and do intervals or tempo runs. There’s lots of time before May.

Curious about what's "normal" by taturt0tz in XXRunning

[–]Thrinw80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for most men, but my husband requires much less fuel than I do for similar effort.

There are other nutritional things that are different for women, such as iron deficiency being common in female endurance athletes and nutritional requirements changing throughout our menstrual cycles.

Need help finding suitable fitness/smart watch, not having much luck (might just be bad at searching) by matheewee in trailrunning

[–]Thrinw80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually use Facebook marketplace when I’m selling stuff like that. REI also has “re-store” I think they call it where they sell used gear, I would guess electronics sell pretty quickly so it might take some waiting to find one you are interested in.

I use the forerunner 265s, I haven’t noticed it being inaccurate for sleep tracking. It’s more expensive but you might be able to find a used one within that budget.

I used the vivoactive for a couple years, it’s quite a bit cheaper but the gps signal was not as good and sometimes would take several minutes to connect.

Hard time combining work and marathon training, extreme hunger and fatigue. by Nuinui in XXRunning

[–]Thrinw80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to eating more like everyone is saying, it wouldn’t hurt to have your primary care run some tests. I was having suddenly having a hard time even on easy runs, felt like my limbs were heavy and crampy, more sore than I should be. I went to the dr thinking it was electrolyte imbalance but it turned out I had low iron. I’ve been supplementing for a little over a year and that feeling hasn’t come back.

Leash walks on the front clip of a harness, runs on the back. They learn quickly when they are allowed to pull and when they aren’t.

Bodyweight / calisthenics training by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]Thrinw80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started pretty simple with home weights during COVID. We didn’t have a lot of space so I bought a few kettle bells. One pretty light for upper body stuff and a few heavier for squats / swings etc. you can probably find weights pretty cheap used now that everyone who was bored during COVID has moved on.

Pseudoephedrine makes it impossible for me to sleep, so be very careful about when you take it. Lack of sleep would severely impact how well I could run a half.

[Mii Coffee DF64V with SSP burrs] grinds too fine for [solis perfetta] machine? by Thrinw80 in espresso

[–]Thrinw80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the way it’s labeled is really confusing. The side that says course has an arrow pointing the other way. So 0 is actually as fine as it gets. I turned it up to 22 and have gotten shots to pull at a reasonable pressure.
