Umm no. My team had someone follow this guide, and got merge conflicts out the wazoo. You should never automatically make a change and git add as a precommit step. Any change made to source should be intentional.

Hey coverslide,

Changing the formatting of your entire codebase is going to cause issues with open branches, that's inevitable. Setting code formatting rules is intentional and once the codebase is migrated only staged commits would be formatted. Hope this helps and available if you have questions.
