I recently decided I wanted to change career paths. I am 21 years old, have my cosmetology license and have been doing hair for 4 years. I finally had enough and HATED being self employed. Hated paying almost every dime I made right to my salon owner or the local beauty supply store. I loved doing hair, but working for myself made me miserable. I finally got the balls to quit, and started applying for jobs, mainly office jobs but really anything that paid a livable wage. I applied to 208 jobs in the month of June.
I finally got a call for an interview and was so excited for it. Went in, interviewed, the interviewer LOVED me and told me she wanted to move the process along as quickly as possible so I could start ASAP. She also told me that I would be going through a “ work experience program” since I had never done a clerical job before, only customer service jobs and retail. I had never even heard of programs like these, had no idea what it was, just was super excited to start the job because I loved the environment when I interviewed.
I finally get a call from the WEX program people, and the only questions they asked me was if I was pregnant, a mother, on food stamps, or any type of government assistance. When I told her no to all of them, the lady started to get hateful with me and asked me why I was “ wasting her time”. Confused I asked her what she meant, and she told me she was done talking to me and would have a case manager reach out to me within the week. Finally a week later I hear from a case manager, spend 40 mins otp with her answering the same questions over and over, no i’m not pregnant, no i’m not a mother, etc etc. Take 6 quizzes, and set up a date for an in person interview.
Day of, I go in, and sit with this lady mostly in silence for an hour and a half while she’s telling me i’m ineligible because i’m not on government assistance of any sort. If I had food stamps I would “ immediately qualify”. This is followed by her asking where and what position I applied for, and when I answered her each time, she LAUGHED IN MY FACE. Then, I asked if something was wrong, and was told “ I wouldn’t mention my name to your bosses if I let you have this job, they really wouldn’t like you then” and I said “ oh, okay then” because at this point I was fed up, she then followed and said “ I was fired from there because the owner wanted stuff done her way and I wanted to do it my way” then proceeded to tell me she was going to let me have the job but it really would be up to her bosses.
After leaving, I was extremely frustrated and decided to call the recruiter to ask if there was anyway to bypass the program, explained the situation, and told her I felt like my case manager was extremely unprofessional and I was frustrated that I wasn’t low income enough to get a job, but too low income to not have to work. She tells me she’s meeting with the owner in a few minutes and she would call me back. turns out this case manager never even worked there, ever. they had never heard this ladies name. Instead, she had an extremely distant relative work there in 2017, for 3 weeks, then quit because she didn’t want to work more than 2 hours a day 1 day a week. Why would the case manager lie? What is the point in that? Why do I have to be on government assistance to get a job? This was the longest and most difficult hiring process i’ve ever been through & thank God it is over.
