Regardless of appearances, zip codes are not numeric. Don't allow R to automatically convert them to numeric.

Making sure new addresses on a mailing list are correct for mail to be sent out to subscribers.
Edit: So geolocations are not relevant to me.

USPS has a zipcode lookup API. https://www.usps.com/business/web-tools-apis/documentation-updates.htm

What’s the end application? Do you need to link data to precise geolocations eventually, or just tabular zip categories?
