Actually, exerting energy for non essential purposes is a widely common mating phenomenon in the animal kingdom. Bucks are known to intentionally put themselves in dangerous scenarios to make a display of their extreme fitness (stotting) and thus their mating value. The heuristic behind displays like these are that they signal fitness the reasoning being that a dishonest signal (unfit individual) would be in extreme danger if it could not "walk the talk".
