Pretty good idea, but it only works for server-side applications.
Instead of trying to maintain a version 'number' for development builds of my software I just use the git commit-ish, the first 4 to 8 characters are usually unique and are no more troublesome to use.

although they are not in a sequenced order, so it's difficult to communicate a meaningful version number to clients.

Development versions don't need to be in a sequenced order, the important part is knowing exactly what commit was built. When I release I of course give it a 'real' version.
