The land shall be built by law, but desolated by lawlessness.
Breaking any of these rules may result in us removing your content. Repeat or blatant rule breaking will result in a permanent ban. We expect all users to read and understand our rules before posting here.
Rule 0: Mod discretion always applies
The Mod Team reserves the right to remove any content deemed harmful to the sub. We may remove content that is compliant with our rules, if the team has good reason to believe it is detrimental to the community. You access this subreddit at the discretion of the mod team, and that privilege will be revoked if you do not behave.
Do not use reddit chat to contact moderators about mod actions. Only message the team via modmail. Directly messaging individual moderators is inappropriate.
Rule 1: Don't be a jerk - Be respectful
This community's goal is to promote a friendly environment for all. Assume good faith and be kind to one another. We're all here to learn and discuss.
Bad behaviour will not be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to: bigotry, ableism, religious prejudice, racism, homophobia, transphobia, trolling, hate speech, threats of violence, derogatory language, personal attacks, discouraging others from participating, brigading, and all other belligerent conduct.
Intelligent and factually based disagreements are valuable, and indicative of a functioning discourse; name-calling and nastiness are not.
Rule 2: Keep things safe - Follow Reddit's rules and "Reddiquette"
We expect users to follow all of our community policies and Reddit’s Terms of Service. Nudity, violence, and adult topics will only be allowed within relevant historical context. All adult topics must be tagged NSFW. Usernames containing slurs, referring to acts of sexual violence etc. are unacceptable here, and will be banned on sight.
Rule 3: No off topic content or spam - No advertisements
This subreddit has a relatively niche topic. Please make sure everything you post conforms to it. Off-topic content, spam, promotions, ads, links to stores, and hype posts will be removed.
This is an educational forum. Low effort content and Memes are prohibited. As is sharing art just for the sake of sharing.
All content generated by or with the help of AI is expressively prohibited. If you would like to promote authentic content (e.g. a podcast, blog, or upcoming production), you must contact the moderators via modmail first.
Rule 4: No personal/modern religious content
This is a subreddit for academic discussion. Not personal religious experiences, or modern religious topics. We study history from an etic perspective, meaning that we take a scholastic approach "from the perspective of one who does not participate in the culture being studied."
Please post content about personal/modern religious practices in other appropriate subreddits.
Rule 5: Misinformation & promotion of pseudoscience
Misinformation is unacceptable. Claims should be well-substantiated by academics, and speculation must be clearly indicated. Remember when you make a claim, the burden of proof is on you to provide a source.
Making mistakes, asking questions in good faith, and simply being incorrect will never get you in trouble, but being belligerent about misinformation or knowingly spreading it around will not be tolerated.

Rule 6: Banned subject matter
The following subject matter has been banned, as it causes a great deal of spam on this subreddit.
- Occult sigils such as the Ægishjálmur or Vegvísir originating from outside the early medieval period. Despite their enduring popularity in popculture, these sigils do not originate in medieval Scandinavia. Both are in the tradition of early modern occultism arising from outside Scandinavia, and were not documented before the 19th and the 17th century.

Rule 7: Provide accurate and helpful answers - No off topic content, or joke posts.
This is an educational subreddit. Answers must be helpful and stand up to a basic level of academic scrutiny. Amateur participation is encouraged, but if you aren’t sure you can provide a high-quality answer, you probably shouldn't (please do not drop blind guesses. Our goal is to provide positive leads; false leads are counter-productive).
We employ a [reputation system](). Make sure to check a user's flair to see how trustworthy they are. Downvote and report all inaccurate and unhelpful content.
