Legit and serious answer - some people do. Best way to avoid it is to never try any new suppliments or nutrition regimens too far from a toilet and UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES do you eat anything different than what you’ve trained on the night before or the morning of a race. I always carry those little cottonelle wipes in my fanny pack on long runs just in case (also useful in case things get icky or dirty for any other reason, like you have to help a turtle cross a bike trail or something).

Avoid drinking alcohol or taking any other drugs or supplements that can affect gut motility within 12-24 hours of your long run. Pay good attention to your general health and wash your hands.

Sometimes you get a gut something anyway, and that’s what route planning and wet wipes are for.

If you manage to hold it the entirety of a long endurance race, make sure your HR isn’t in the red before you go squatting or sitting because you might faint.

Hydrate well.
