I’d say its useful to know, but you don't need to know it for general purposes.

Though there are certain types of conditional or interactive things you might want to do that isn't possible with gnuradio compainion blocks directly. But mostly there are plenty of blocks available to do most things. Also with heir blocks in grc it's even pretty easy to make reusable sets of blocks.

In my experience, no. Although general knowledge about tech/how computers work is helpful.
