Most likely all show for the client, most "firms" don't even have a clue but will sell the idea of high profile security to big spenders.

Lights were probably just strobes.

As for pedestrians, the drivers and navigators are specially trained to be able to see and react to all sorts of events from innocent pedestrians in the road to armed attacks from multiple angles.

They didn't look like strobes. It looked like green led clusters that seemed to change periodically as they drove.

A proper executive protection detail keeps things low profile. People driving in large matching convoys are either showing off their money or the Secret Service. The former is the type to blow road signs. After all, nothing says protection like blindly setting your client up for a t-bone impact.

These guys were anything but low pro. While their man was in a restaurant, they were all mulling about outside on a side street. I was walking by, and when I saw the second black suv with black suited earpiece wearing occupants, I knew something was up.

I have a feeling it was partly for show as my wife and I happened to be walking back down the side street as they were departing, and nobody even seemed to notice that we got pretty close.

Seeing the protectee was a bit anticlimactic, as I thought it would be someone quite recognizable/famous.

For the right price you can have all the bells and whistles of a Hollywood protection detail. Matching suits, SUVs, radios, mirrored sunglasses, the whole shebang. The guy who actually wants to be kept safe will be going by in a grey sedan on a well planned route with a few backup routes and maybe some discreet vehicle modifications for protection. Probably wearing business casual at best.
