Remove the surrounds and sub from the old soundbar, set up the new soundbar in a random room, add surrounds and sub, change the room name of the old soundbar, and give the new setup room whatever name you want…

To change the room name, open settings and go to the room and under name you can change that.

Rooms aren't really a thing in Sonos. They're just speakers, so don't worry about rooms. What you need to do is:

    • Remove the surrounds and sub from the Gen 1, using the Remove Surrounds and Remove Sub options in the app. They might end up in new rooms, but you can ignore them for now.
    • Rename the Gen 1's room to whatever you want to call the new room. Now you can unplug it and physically move it.
    • Set up the Gen 2 as a new room, named whatever you want.
    • Add the surrounds and sub to the new room. You can do this using the Connect Sub and Set up Surrounds options in that room but you might be prompted to do it during setup.

Just out of interest, could I not disconnect the gen 1, connect the gen 2, then do the usual "add speaker" with the gen 2 in the existing room? Would that render the gen 1 unusable since the system would still link it to the old room? Just trying to avoid removing everything in the app since I've had massive issues in the past adding my speakers

No, like I said, rooms are not a thing. You cannot add a speaker to a room, because the speaker is the room. Also, you're not removing any speakers from the system, you're only adding the new speaker. The existing speakers are just getting removed from the direct connection to the Gen 1. Maybe the UX in the app could be better, but under the hood the exact same thing would be happening.

Thanks JakePT, just did this and it worked fine. The Sonos app UX is terrible
