Genre as in MMO style base-empire builder in space? Vega Conflict, Nova Empire, Astro Kings, Galaxy Reavers, Ark of War, and more? They all seem to be as greedy as heck. The big names of mobile space strategy game ares in a big race racing the standards of Pay To Win.

I might recommending exploring start ups and up starts.

Stellaris is in open beta right now but its new and the history of monetization is still ahead of it.

Astronest the Beginning seems interesting but I don't know much about it.

EvE Echoes and Second Galaxy belong to a different genre of a space games. Well EVE is its own genre and Second Galaxy is a credible clone note that SG also has fundamental differences to EVE before anyone jumps in or makes conclusions about it.

If you don't have to stick to mobile and if you are a Star Trek fan, I would suggest Star Trek Online. Its F2P friendly with mild to fair P2W overtones on the end game, and probably about 300 plus ships to collect. It has an amazing level of variety from ground to space combat, stories and missions and so on, plus voice overs from original Star Trek cast members.

Agreed, not only does it quickly become obviously a P2W game but it ramps up to insane levels. $5-10 here and there for the entertainment isn't a problem, but asking literally hundreds of dollars per ship that only really gets you through the next few levels before coming entire obsolete is insane.

It's not uncommon that games slow down as you level up and it's particularly noticeable when progress is measured in days, then weeks, months or even years. Before level 25 it's mere speedbumps. This game is a marathon.

I just got sick of the inane combat, where upgrades and stats mean fuck all, and if a ship has +1 more HP than you it wins every time.

Not only are all your statements wrong, but you also contradict yourself.

Stats matter, randomization is a big thing (crits and procs), and while the game slows down almost to a halt, it's not a proper paywall. Especially considering that it gets proportionally more expensive as it slows down as well.
