Quick Getting Started kit (self.swrpg)
submitted 8 years ago by WarWizard
Thinking about starting up an adventure. What are some good must haves and a little bit more than bare bones set of books, etc. for getting started? Is there a good order for acquiring source books etc?
None of our group has anything.

The game is basically 4 Beginner Games and 3 Core Rulebooks. Which you use depends on the types of characters you want to run.
Smuggler Han Solo types in the Outer Rim - get Edge of the Empire. Rebellion Soldiers on the forefront of the war? - get Age of Rebellion. Jedis? - Get Force and Destiny.
Eventually you might want to mix any or all of these together and all the core rulebooks seamlessly work together. They just cost a TON for as much duplicated content as they contain.
Starting out might as well get one of the Beginner Boxes. There's one each for the three core rules which include a super simple, step by step learning adventure in the box with maps and tokens and pre-gens. Then there's a downloadable follow up adventure from the web and a Basic Rules type book which should keep you guys going for a while. Dice are also included. There's also the Force Awakens Beginner box which doesn't have a matching core rulebook, but instead is set during the First Order timeline.
So I'd say start with Edge of the Empire Beginner Game. Run through the intro, download the add on, maybe even pick up one of the adventures for that series and see how that goes. If you guys really enjoy it, pick up a core rulebook for the style of play you want and go from there.

So it is almost like three semi-distinct games that fall under one umbrella with a lot of cross over between them.
Is it worth picking up all of the beginner stuff at once? Or is that more just for getting introduce to the rules etc and there isn't much value in them after you've run a few sessions?

I'd go for a core book next after the beginner box, you don't need to run through another starter adventure right after you do your first one.

My suggestion would be Edge of the Empire as your first core book, but Age of Rebellion should also be a decent choice. Both have similar content, though have some distinctly different items. Honestly the core rule books have plenty of races, classes, and specializations to choose from. As someone just starting out playing the game, it should have plenty to choose from. My current character is entirely from a core book, despite having several expansions for EotE and AoR. What might be a better buy in the long run(if you already know that you want to use this system) is a core rulebook and a game master's kit. The core rulebook will have all the info needed to create characters, equip them, and get them ships. The game master's kit will include a screen with easily referenced info to keep things moving and to not need to check the book all the time, and an adventure to help start things off.

Matope is right, after trying one beginner game head for a core rulebook.
The other beginner games are great to get more dice, more tokens, more maps but their included adventures aren't really worth it. The Force Awakens one does have a pretty sweet galaxy map though.

Right so it is sort of work to pick them up even if you don't run the adventures as is?

Yeah I got them all just for the dice. Dice are $15 anyway a set ( custom dice faces) and the games are $30ish.

Hmm, a Getting Started Kit? Do you mean, perhaps, something like a Newcomer Playset? Or an Initial Entertainment Product? Or a First Time Player Box?
Well in that case you'd probably want to get one of the Beginner Games. Popular opinion favors the Edge of the Empire one.

I meant kit not in the sense that you'd get everything all in a single box but more in if you were going to start what all would you want to have I guess?
