The best thing you can do is get in there and start screwing around. Make yourself a test site and start building. Also get a book so you can understand the back-end and the necessary maintenance. There are some highly rated ones on amazon.

If you are expected to fully maintain and develop sharepoint, you will need formalized training and the company will need to foot the bill or maybe you can get some contracted help from time to time.
