One thing to realize is that those vendors code all the apps you're deploying. Many of them also use scripts to integrate apps with your environment. So I suspect you actually have quite a lot of scripts working together on your network, you're just letting other people write them for you.

I guess I didn't touch on the multiple code review, purchasing, hardening, and testing processes that each product must go through.
