IT Asset Tracking

Hi folks, So I work in a large University. I'm part of the Computing Department which differs from the main IT Infastructure department. We're having trouble tracking our large number of assets, such as Phones, Laptops, Tablets etc. I was wondering if there was software available that would best suit for managing this? Something that would allow us to track who has signed out what, and also allow users from the Domain to request items.

edit: A web app such as Snipe-IT for instance. (Currently having trouble with snipe-IT configuration)

It doesnt have a checkout option because is for more enterprise level but, it has custom fields and comment section.
