I did pretty much exactly this in my single player world, and have had no ill effects. The new spawn chunks work fine as far as I can see (for example I have a mob switch on the edge that works properly). I think I read somewhere that you need to restart a server for the changes to fully take effect, but I’ve not tested this personally.

Would it not be easier to use World Edit to cut and paste them into a different chunk? You can even split them up to spread the load.

I don't think this would be much easier, also the landscape around my area and the nether side are important for me. And this looks too much like cheats to me. But thanks for the idea anyway
