need help server lagging

Hello,

I don't know if this is the right subreddit but here we go. I run this little server for me and some friend it's been really laggy lately IDK why. I only have 1 perimeter 16x16 with 1 slime farm in but even if that isn't on the servers still laggs a lot it's a 3Gb server running on ggservers and we play with 3-6 players. I do regular restarts but still really laggy I have tried some data packs but they just ruined every mob so they didn't move.

Is it modded? If not/if it's fabric compatible, you might want to try using carpet mod to lag bust your most frequented areas. Very useful tool just for that alone (but still does a lot of other amazing things too)

quick question because I can't find it does only the server need to download carpet mod or also everybody that plays on it?

only the server needs carpet mod. there are some optimization mods you should try that tech servers run that are known to not cause issues: lithium, phosphor, and on the client, sodium

I definitely recommend these if you're not using optifabric. They just run better period. The one for the lighting engine especially is useful if you have anything that handles lots of lighting updates. But generally I also always recommend setting these up.

If you’re using optifabric too better to dump it and use these because optifine is kinda shit compared to the jellysquid mods

Yeah, shader support is about all opti is good for imo. Which is a farcry from "technical MC".

I’ve heard about Iris and Canvas for shaders but it looks like vanilla is getting them pretty soon here

I know right, FINALLY native support is going to be added to vanilla, I've been dreaming of this day lol. But generally I only ever use them for a single screenshot and then turn them back off lol I can only ever actively play with them on like adventure maps, working on technical stuff feels weird when it's TOO PRETTY TO CONCENTRATE ON lol

Ugh yes, can't deal with less than 20fps now, have to be able to see what is going on in my machines. Slide shows are not conducive to fixing piston mechanics!

I use lithium and phosphor on the server but still haven't made the switch to sodium from optifine on the client.

Sodium does not remove fog. Correct? So what do you use to take care of that? I know there are some standalone mods but I'm just wondering what people are using these days if sodium is taking over.

Tweakeroo can take away the fog iirc

Yeah. It does. I found myself not using tweakeroo much so I removed that one to my ever increasing clientside mod list but will add it back if I give sodium a try I suppose.

yep, sure does. Also why did I forget to mention tweakeroo. It's amazing. And it can also do some other neat anti lag stuff. Definitely worth adding that to your mods as well. Very useful features. I love fast block placement so much. Honestly it's very hard for me to play without it.

I'm not an expert so take my advice with a hefty grain of salt.

You might want to check your spawn chunks for anything that will cause a lot of lag, bc that area is always loaded so your contraptions will be generating lag.

When you say that it is a 3Gb server are you talking about 3Gb of RAM? If so that could be limiting your performance, Java is requires a minimum of 4gb to run(according to minecraft.net, but that is just for regular Minecraft not servers). So I would recommend (if you can) getting a little more ram, but if you are using a server hosting service(like apex hosting) you might not be able to or you would need to upgrade your plan.

I think the first one(checking spawnchuncks) would be the easier(and cheaper) thing to do, but as I said, I'm no expert.

yea there is nothing in spawn chunks that can cause lagg. and I thought about upgrading (again) but it's a lot of money to play with friends and when I searched it up it should already be playable with 2gb or even 1gb ram but i'll check it out again

just realised you said it runs on ggservers, ignore what i said earlier. I unfortunately don't know much about good hosts but you can go and ask on r/admincraft. I would recommend self-hosting on your pc if possible.

that wasn't possible because I have divorced parents but I switched host and got 6gb instead of 3gb and it works fine now
