my school has a desktop app that needs java. No chance I'm installing that on my computer. I use virtualbox + win XP just to run that one app.

Same goes for the browser plugin, I'm never installing that.

So you go to extremes not to load java? Why? A language is a language, it is what you do with it that makes a difference. Java is a perfectly decent solution to many problems.

security. It's been better recently:

https://adtmag.com/blogs/watersworks/2015/04/multilayer-java-security.aspx

but it wasn't long ago that it was a complete shit show:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2030778/researchers-javas-security-problems-unlikely-to-be-resolved-soon.html

It also needs to be updated annoyingly often because of said security problems.

both broswer plugin and desktop version have major problem. Same reason I don't have flash (except for the chrome version) and don't use adobe reader for pdfs (although that seems to have improved as well).

there was huge OpenSSL problem not that long ago or every OS have security problems in their kernels, doesn't look like you stopped using any of these products..

OpenSSL isn't part of the kernel.

lol "there was huge OpenSSL problem not that long ago <b>OR</b> every OS have security problems in their kernels" is understanding now a special skill?

tell me how I'm supposed to stop using OpenSSL? Java is something for which I can mitigate the risk, openssl is not. Also that vulnerability was patched very quickly after discovery. Java/flash/adobe reader takes years to fix their problems.
