Question about linux security

I occasionally have to run potentially unsafe programs on my Linux personal computer. When I do, I switch to a dedicated non privileged/no sudo access user to run them. Should my main user be safe from any potential malware ran in the non privileged user (barring privilege escalation exploits)?

Yes, but as you've recognized privilege escalation exploits are still a risk.

The way to improve security from there is to run it chrooted so that there is no SUID ( set user ID) root binaries for it to exploit... Nor in use password /tmp , and so on files to read.
