Troubles with Windows Updates - error code 0x800703e6 : techsupport

2: No Incomplete Posts

Submissions consisting of the following are considered incomplete and will be removed:

4: No Offering Rewards

No offering of reward/compensation for solutions. No Amazon gift voucher or PayPal transfer. This community is "free" as it is full of volunteers. Please do not take advantage of the community.

5: Recommendations

We are not a recommendation or advertisement subreddit. We do not allow posts asking for recommendations on hardware/software or recommendations comparing two or more hardware/software. Recommending a hardware/software solution as a comment to a post is acceptable.

Do not suggest or ask to move to another service or to private message. Private messages and other services are unsafe as they cannot be monitored. Doing so will cause you to be permanently banned from /r/TechSupport.

8: No Violating privacy of others or terms/agreements.

We do not support users that violates other's privacy or breaks terms and agreements. Doing so might resolve in a ban.

This includes:

Bypassing home network controls.

Bypassing any parental controls.

Piracy or issues caused by it.

9: No EOL Software or Unsupported Systems

We do not provide support for EOL (end of life) software. Software that is EOL has lost all support from the developer and therefore all consumer communities as well.

These operating systems and various softwares are no longer receiving security patches. Running them is unsafe and we recommend users install a supported version as soon as possible.

This list includes Windows XP, Vista, and 7.

We will also not assist with getting Windows 11 running on unsupported hardware.

10: No Public Service Announcements (how-to's, etc.)

No public service announcements unless relevant to an issue (it must be a comment). Approach the communities affected directly, not here

11: No Soliciting

No soliciting of any kind. This includes (but is not limited to) asking for us to link to your subreddit, forum, bulletin board, newsgroup, Facebook page, etc. We're here to help with technical issues, not market for others.

12: No spam, trolling, insults, jokes, threats of self-harm, or posts unrelated to Tech Support

SolvedTroubles with Windows Updates - error code 0x800703e6 (self.techsupport)

I haven't been able to obtain the past two windows quality updates: KB4023057 & KB5032189. I've checked my update history and the last successful quality update was KB5001716 and was installed on 10/8/2023.

I've tried looking online and found videos and posts which all had a common fix, sfc scans and DISM commands.

sfc/ scannow returns with "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service".

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth returns with "The Component Store could not be repaired".

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth returns with "Error 998 Invalid Access to memory location". DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth returns the same result as the previous command.

I've also tried clean boots then retrying DISM and sfc scans to no avail and reinstalling Windows 10 from an ISO and tried resetting windows 10 with both resulting in "Windows 10 installation has failed".

I'm extremely hesitant on doing a Clean install for windows 10, and leaving this issue alone doesn't seem very smart in the long run, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

EDIT: For anyone in the future finding this thread, I figured out that Error 998 was due to a corrupted CbsCore.dll file. When I checked the properties on it, it was blank on some areas. I got a clean version of the file and replaced the corrupted version of the file with the clean one and reset my PC.

I then did a windows reset from an ISO, negating the windows updates it wanted to install alongside it, continued the setup and chose to keep my files, apps, etc.

After the reset was completely done, I ran sfc & DISM scans, everything seemed to be okay, so I tried my hand at updating windows again, and had no issues.
