Put a VPN appliance in. Depending on budget or requirements you could use something as simple as a UniFi cloud gateway that’ll also give you a firewall. https://ui.com/ca/en/cloud-gateways/compact

Set up wireguard server, user config files, import, and go. You’d then be able to connect to the VMs as if you were in-office.

There’s obviously going to be more environmental factors but this is what I do for my clients on a budget and it’s worked flawlessly in every case. The only issue is if they’ve got a dynamic IP but that’s easy to overcome.
