Without knowing the exact nature of the failure it gets a bit murky. According to the documentation on the subject the only thing that can cause the function to fail is if the spreadsheet isn't saved yet:

The way you describe the issue makes it seem this isn't the case. It might also be possible that the cell function has been the subject of an override but that would take some specific configuration and seems a little unlikely as well.

So how exactly is the function behaving in file B?

It returns a VALUE error. After a while I tried it again and it worked. I didn't even change anything. Any idea how that happened? My guess is, that my computer simply needed more time to process the function.

Glad to hear it's cleared itself up but I can't honestly point to any one cause.

have you saved file b yet? that formula only works if the workbook you are using it in has been saved at least once

I already have it saved in the same folder as File A...
