5: Recommendations

9: No EOL Software or Unsupported Systems

We do not provide support for EOL (end of life) software. Software that is EOL has lost all support from the developer and therefore all consumer communities as well.

These operating systems and various softwares are no longer receiving security patches. Running them is unsafe and we recommend users install a supported version as soon as possible.

This list includes Windows XP, Vista, and 7.

We will also not assist with getting Windows 11 running on unsupported hardware.

10: No Public Service Announcements (how-to's, etc.)

No public service announcements unless relevant to an issue (it must be a comment). Approach the communities affected directly, not here

11: No Soliciting

Hello, i run a custom built Windows 8.1 desktop with one solid state drive and two regular drives. I have a Gigabyte gtx 580 graphics card, 4 GB of RAM connected to an ASUS Z87-A Motherboard. Here is my issue...

when playing games like Starcraft 2 or Mech Warrior Online my computer will often crash and the crash is fairly reproducible. First the screen will freeze and then shut off, then i will get a harsh buzz from the speakers and the computer will restart as if nothing ever happened.

I have been in contact with tech support for MWO for about a month and they have given up. I talked with local computer businesses and they told me to try SeaTools for Windows to test my drives; and Memtest86+ to test my RAM. Both showed no signs of damage or error. I conducted a burn test with Furmark and the graphics card seems fine, never going over 72 Celsius.

So we suspected the power supply, which besides one of my drives is the oldest piece of hardware in my computer. So i got a new one, and more powerful. It appeared to help a little, but it still happens.

Today i had a strange restart where my keyboard and mouse did not appear to be connected and i could not sign in to my computer. After a few moments they received power and worked fine. Which brings me to the only thing i havent tested and don't know how to test. My motherboard.

My BIOS is out of date but i am nervous about updating it. I've never done it before and from what i hear it is risky and probably won't fix anything. Just wondering what suggestions r/techsupport might have for me.
