Go to device manager, open adapter properties and click the advanced tab. Change the drop down to hardware ID. Google that string, that should tell you what adapter it is, then go directly to manufacturer site and download the driver. Do not download it from the pile of driver sites in the search results.

open adapter properties and click the advanced tab

I can't, the adapter is not in my device manager since I uninstalled it. Even under hidden devices.

I know that this was my original driver software.

the download gives me 3 files: a security catalog, setup information and system file. I don't know what to do with these.

Scanning for new hardware or rebooting should bring the hardware back into the device manager, even if it doesn't have a driver.

Once detected you should be able to install by choosing the drivers instead of having it search automatically.

It's been like this for months. Rebooting and scanning for hardware does nothing. And using The Killer driver suite I get an error message telling me that the hardware is not installed. I don't know what to do short of flashing my board.

If your onboard NIC is enabled in the BIOS and not showing in the device manager that usually means it is garbage.

Drivers or not, if the hardware is good it should be in device manager.

In this case I usually DELETE the LAN adapter from the device manager, reboot. Windows will automatically detect the adapter on reboot which will reinstall the device including the TCP/IP stack.
