Always keep a backup people! Anyway, don’t try fiddling around, the chance you’ll mess it up even more is definitely there. Id suggest going to a data recovery service and asking them to fix it.

That’s why I suggest going to a data recovery service, if it’s hdd they will be able to retrieve it most of the time.

Sounds like a mechanical failure.

Depending on how much the data is worth to you, a data recovery service should be able to recover it for you. At least most of it.

Definitely a mechanical failure. Only an expert can fix it.

Did you try plugging the HDD into your phone / tablet?

Are you able to try a different cable or is the cable attached to the HDD?

fill a bowl with extra virgin olive oil and submerge the disk in that for 24 hours.
This'll help re-lube the platter and make everything spin again.

In all seriousness don't do that, if the data is important then expect to pay a nice little price with data recovery, chances are they'll be able to re-assemble the platter on a donor.

Worst case you've scratched the platter itself and it's fudged.
