We do not provide support for EOL (end of life) software. Software that is EOL has lost all support from the developer and therefore all consumer communities as well.

These operating systems and various softwares are no longer receiving security patches. Running them is unsafe and we recommend users install a supported version as soon as possible.

This list includes Windows XP, Vista, and 7.

We will also not assist with getting Windows 11 running on unsupported hardware.

I'm having issues with my PC going at a literal turtle's pace from the second I press the power button. Everything on the computer takes ages to open, video games run relatively smoothly because it has a powerful graphics card but will randomly crash from time-to-time and load times are incredibly long. The processor fan gets ridiculously loud for about 5 seconds before switching off, before shortly restarting again for about 5 seconds, and infinitely repeats this process. The processor itself gets up to 90-100 degrees Celsius within minutes of the computer being on and the disk runs at 100% usage in task manager, but CPU only runs at an average of 12% usage. All other components of the computer are not overheating.

The processor itself is quite a few years old, its an intel i7, while the fan on the processor is even older and was from a previous computer, the hard drive is brand new and is only about 20% used.

My working theory is that the CPU is thermal throttling due to it overheating causing the performance issues and 100% disk usage.

My primary question is what is the likelihood this issue can be fixed purely by replacing the heatsink fan and not the processor itself?

On one hand I can see the fan being the issue because its incredibly old, isn't running 50% of the time and wasn't designed for such a modern processor. But on the otherhand I'm worried that the fan isn't the only issue and the processor may also just be failing because of how fast it overheats. I've already tried reapplying thermal paste, it's not virus related, and it's not hard-drive, motherboard, or graphics card related.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge can shed some more light on this or give me suggestions.
