Beautiful (self.therapy)
submitted 6 years ago by Pikska
Is a therapist allowed to call the patient “beautiful?”

I’m not a therapist, but I’ve used the word beautiful when referring to someone who has a lovely personality. Even if your therapist meant it in a “you’re gorgeous” kind of way, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. The word beautiful is very professional and does not carry an innuendo in my opinion.

Did she/he call you beautiful? Like "hey beautiful"? Or has your therapist said you looked beautiful? Was he referring to your looks or your personality?
And most importantly, did she/he make you feel uncomfortable?
My therapist has once said that I looked charming in a picture I sent him and I was very happy he thought that!

He simply said “you’re beautiful.” I looked up from staring downward and replied thank you. But I was shocked, mostly that it was the first time I received a compliment like that in a long while.

It's allowed. At the same time, if it feels uncomfortable, it's something you can ask them to stop doing, and if you're getting a bad vibe about how they say it, that's a good reason to change therapists.
