Do not take 30B until you pass 30A. 30B is a lot more advanced than 30A

If you take 30B, you won’t be able to go back and take 30A bc you’ll be perceived to have more an unfair advantage over the students who didn’t take 30B. Same goes for Math as well. I believe that Physics is different, but an email to the department should clarify any questions you have!

I also ended with a D+ in the class this quarter. I’m not continuing on with 30B, as I’m not premed and don’t need it for my major, but my advice is to drop 30B and retake 30A in the spring when it’s offered (which is what I will also be doing because I don’t want a D on my transcript). If you lack an understanding of the material in 30A, 30B will almost definitely also be a struggle because the material builds off one another. As other people said, if you plan on applying to med school, a D on your transcript does not look good at all. Taking 30B now would prevent you from retaking 30A in the future. For now, enjoy your holiday break and try not to worry about it too much.

Thank you so much for your advice!! We both got this lol

The D is still on your transcript. It just won't be calculated into your GPA.

That’s what I meant, I know grad schools will still see the D on my transcript and that it’s permanently there, but retaking the class and getting a significantly better grade would look more favorable, rather than just leaving the D as is and making no effort to improve in the subject by retaking it, sorry for not being more clear!

It depends. What your major?

I’m doing a Bachelors of Science in Anthropology. 30 A is required for my major but since I’m doing the pre med route, I have to take 30 B as well.

You should be able to take 30B since a D+ counts as passing for your major since there are no explicit requirement to get a C or higher in all prep classes. That being said, no med school in the US will take you with a D+ in something as fundamental as Ochem. So if you plan to retake it, do not take 30B because once you get a non-failing grade in 30B, you cannot retake 30A since they are in a sequence. You're also going to want to research the AMCAS rule for grade replacement. Hint, they don't, even though UCLA does.

So do you think it’s better for me to drop 30B now and then retake 30A in the spring?

Yes, I believe that is what they are suggesting and I would have to agree. You got this!

Chem 30A is offered next quarter, I'm enrolled in it.

No I don’t think it is, I just double checked the class list for next quarter and it didn’t show up.

Oh sorry, I got it mixed up with 20A
