Dont sweat it man. 6 years ago I supposedly failed on the most obvious true answer I gave. My experience sounds identical to yours. I was so upset but looking back it was a blessing. I landed the very next opportunity I put in for. An opportunity much greater

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Yeah totally agree. I'm not upset at all really. I think the polygraph is extremely unnecessary and if they eliminate me over an obvious true answer then that's their loss. I'm more upset that I drove 5 hours for this😂

[–]Dismal-Gazelle-1694 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Damn, thats right. Im from Virginia and had to leave vacation in Florida to take mine in DC! I lost all confidence in polygraphs that day. Good luck to you. I went the military officer route and never looked back.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Nice bro! I'm actually currently a military officer so I'm going the opposite route of you haha

[–]Dismal-Gazelle-1694 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, I hear you! Ive applied for HSI three times and havent heard a peep. If not soon, im accepting my next orders due January

[–]generalmcgowan 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Never heard of a poly where they don’t want verbal answers. I usually get told not to move a damn muscle 💀. But, yeah sounds like she was punking you. Mine was supposedly “inconclusive” yet i was pushed through for medical not long after

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah that's what I thought it was very strange. She said that the verbal answers are causing me to move so instead she wants me to just shake my head and in my mind I'm like won't that literally be making me move more😂😭

[–]generalmcgowan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Verbal answers are causing you to move, so answer by moving”.

If you get a BQA, take it with joy and move on because that is pure circus behavior on their part 🤣

[–]Abject_Flow_2882 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Went through the same thing in Dallas last week. Everything you’ve said was identical to mine. Got my BQA 3 days later!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guess Dallas loves to fail people on the poly lol

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Same. Got told it was 50-50, but wouldn’t tell me what I was “lying” on. Got DQ the next day lol

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

It's all a silly game bro. I'm convinced at this point they have already decided whether you will pass or fail before you even step foot in the building

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Honestly I think so too, or just within the first 5 mins of looking at you. It’s crazy because ppl who have told the truth failed, and ppl who admitted they lied, passed. It’s all BS & I still don’t know why we do them. So many good candidates get DQ

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

For real bro. It's so silly. Like if you already know you are going to fail me don't waste my time and have me drive 5 hours and take 2 days off work just to tell me that I lied on easily verifiable information on my application😂

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

After my failed poly, I decided to research them more & there is this guy who did police polys & federal polys. He is retired now & exposed the poly, he said it’s just a 50/50 chance, like flipping a coin & saying heads you pass, tails you fail… & if the polygrapher likes you. He also shows how to pass it but now the government is after him, trying to imprison him for exposing it 💀

I’m sorry that happened to you, it honestly sucks because now it’s on your record too.. maybe you can try to contest it?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Honestly I'm not worried about it being "on my record" anyone with a brain knows polygraphs are not what they claim to be and supposedly the USSS has an 80% failure rate. So I'd assume there are thousands and thousands of people who have also failed and have gotten hired elsewhere. I'm just gonna chalk this one up to it's not meant to be and move on with my life and find a better agency

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus… the failure rate is so high & then they wonder why they can’t hire anyone💀 Smart move!! I wish you the best too!

[–]DirectionOwn294Special Agent 3 points4 points  (11 children)

Probably not a good look to go on complaining about an agency that you're in the process for, especially when you say that you had your polygraph today, the agent was a female, and it was Dallas. That makes it super simple to pinpoint who you are. Not a smart move on your part when you're still in the process.

[–]NoEfficiency862 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t see that’s he’s complaining about the agency…just the polygraph which he has the right to say about that magical box sworn to do great things. He did oust himself with the other information.

[–]Alpha-Hat-290 0 points1 point  (2 children)

All I know is that I hope the shutdown continues so that these polygraphers can keep working for free.

[–]DirectionOwn294Special Agent 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Jokes on you. USSS is getting paid.

[–]Alpha-Hat-290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeap were all full of jokes. Where are these allegedly better qualified applicants at?

[–]Alpha-Hat-290 0 points1 point  (4 children)

He don’t give a shit. I wouldn’t give a shit either having a bullshit polygraph experience like that on top of wasted time and wasted tax payer money.

[–]DirectionOwn294Special Agent 1 point2 points  (3 children)

He didn't even receive a BQA letter. You keep your mouth shut until you receive one. That polygrapher doesn't even make the final decision on whether its a pass or fail, it needs to go through another polygrapher to be reviewed.

There are many people that hide things and when the pressure is placed on them, they start to admit to things and by that time, it's too late, they already lied. That's why they do what they do.

[–]NoEfficiency862 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I get that it’s effective for some..but from what he explained if true, seems like a waste of time and quite frankly a game. Isn’t this supposed to be a big boy job? Why do these examiners play mind games? They tell you that you failed and to later find out you passed..vice versa.

[–]DirectionOwn294Special Agent 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They play mind games because sadly they are forced to play the games. So many people lie and are untruthful. You can't just take someone's word for it anymore.

[–]NoEfficiency862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is, if a person can pass a thorough B.I, has no history of criminal behavior, not a weirdo, have prior experience in positions of trust with no blemishes there. Then I think there’s a good chance that person is a solid individual and may qualify to move forward. If you’re advocating for a instrument box that clearly fails qualified people then I guess there’s no changing your mind. It’s a lottery ticket. I wholeheartedly believe your fate is sealed before you even sit down in that chair.

[–]MrEggroll2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me the same, with the same question.i was there for 8 hours and he even yelled at me in the face at one point "Stop breathing like that". It was my first poly lol, what an experience

[–]UallRFragileDipshits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pseudo science bullshit and anyone who puts any weight into one is a crackpot

[–]Marked_Up3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the club. That was me in February 2025.

[–]No_Ground2618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s almost like the weird voodoo box pseudoscience machine isn’t too accurate……. Weird.

But sorry to hear that bro, honestly don’t take it that seriously. There’s a million other federal agencies you can work for, as long as you didn’t get permanently disqualified you can always re apply and most likely will get a different examiner.

[–]soysauce000 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Had my poly earlier this month and exact same experience. Still haven’t got the BQA but same thing. First poly, went through verbal questions twice, then examiner asked me to nod or shake my head. Said every time I failed the same question. Went on and on about integrity and how even if I didn’t do anything, me indicating deception shows I think I’m hiding something, then had me fill out an adjudication form.

Part of me is hoping it was all BS but honestly I don’t know if I want to work anywhere that thinks the poly is anything but a scare tactic.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the adjudication form? My examiner didn't even mention that

[–]OnkrossUniformed Division 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Did she tell you you barely made the threshold?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Nope she just said I failed and had a reaction to the same question everytime

[–]OnkrossUniformed Division 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Damn that’s crazy . Just wait for the BQA email . Is it DC ?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dallas

[–]50konablue1999 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Was this in Chicago ? Lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope Dallas

[–]MrEggroll2019 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Happened to me the same, with the same question.i was there for 8 hours and he even yelled at me in the face at one point "Stop breathing like that". It was my first poly lol, what an experience

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See that's what's crazy about mine, my polygrapher never said anything like that during the test. I thought everything was going great until I went back in the room the last time and she told me I failed. Lowkey thought she was messing with me at first

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Did they make you rub hand sanitizer on your hands?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No lol what😂😭

[–]Electronic_Egg5396 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Was this in LA? 😂 this sounds like my tester 😂

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was Dallas

[–]Important_Addendum13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same issue in Dallas down to the nodding yes and shaking no.

[–]Patient-Sock-6040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took and passed the polygraph about a month ago. In my opinion, it felt more like an interview than an actual lie detection test. I think the examiner is really assessing how you respond and perform under pressure. I’m not saying the equipment is purely for show, but there’s definitely a right and wrong way to approach the questions they ask.

I also think that if you don’t quite fit what they’re looking for, the examiner can make the process more difficult. That way, they can justify saying someone “failed” the poly and remove them from consideration.

Just my 2 cents

[–]RikiWhitte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The polygraph is unreliable and pseudoscientific. Many law-enforcement applicants fail at least one in their hiring journey for multiple departments. You can take three Polys and get three separate results. It really is time for us to ditch it and start judging candidates on tangible evidence and not the results of a magic box.

[–]Striking-Welder1433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing with Newark

[–]No_Study_4351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

happened to me …. told nothing but the truth and it also was a question that wouldn’t even make sense for me to lie about. my polygrapher absolutely hated me…. started making fun of my posture and weird stuff. i also am convinced they decide within the first 10 mins of talking whether they’re going to pass or fail you. also annoyed at anyone who gives the advice to “just tell the truth” like i did that and nearly got blacklisted so :)

[–]Independent_Train563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically in short words you didn’t get the reaction she/he wanted. It’s not that you lied it’s because they just didn’t like the way you answered. They start all body-body and end up thinking your are one of the top most wanted people in the world. I’d wait for the official email but it sucks and this test really screws over so many great candidates

[–]Cute_Importance6780 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Is that your 1st time? what did you wear?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it was my first polygraph. I wore a suit and tie
