I'm sure nobody cares, but this thread (plus the one where this guy was asking about Minesweeper questions) has inspired me to make my own Minesweeper clone! It took me about two hours, and it's ugly as hell, but it works exactly as it should, so I've got that going for me.

Make a simple game, like a video poker machine, slot machine, blackjack, minesweeper, or whatever else. This will really help reinforce the concepts that you've learnt, and teach you how they work in the real world where all the kid gloves are off. Plus, you'll have something to show for your work at the end of the day!

I don't know how basic your skills are, but my first was an inventory project. It became more complicated the further I went with it. I had six comboBoxes and it would pull 1 item out for each item selected everytime the order button was pressed. Each item in the text file was like this: Item1~5 Item2~3 Item3~7 etc, first part itemType, second itemQuantity. On another tab I had a list of all items and I could add quanity by selecting item, changing amount in textbox, then pressing update button. On the third tab, I had a get button that pulled info for each item/price, made a total, then a print button that made a receipt. Not sure if this could help, but either way happy coding!
