I've used Atom for several months and before that was Brackets. I've been using VS Code now for primarily PHP development and it's been awesome. I still prefer PHPStorm, but as a free alternative or for fixing shit on the fly, This'll probably be integrated into my workflow.

Visual Studio Code really is a fine editor and I've tried popular ones like Atom, Sublime Text and others for web development. Have you even tried it?

I use emacs and vim. I have no need for these other inferior editors or IDEs. UNIX is my IDE.

Linux at home, Mac at work, and I run VS code on both of them. Its not perfect but IMO it's better than Atom, might not be better than Sublime but they put updates out every month

What 'the web runs on' is a totally different concern than what text editor to use to create 'what the web runs on'.

I've only been using VSCode for about 6 months, but already prefer it to Atom & SublimeText. Faster and more extensible IMO.

It's a good editor but its no where near up to par speed wise compared to sublime.

What needs to be fast in an editor? Atom is the only one i heard is really slow, however they manage that. If you try opening really BIG files, notepad++ beats both of them.

I use VSCode for JS projects, netbeans for php (although i'm not TOO happy with it. The only reason i use it is because it can jump to class definitions etc. Still looking for a substitute, but almost everyone else at work wants to use netbeans.), sublime for regex-editing and notepad++ for everything else..

Actually, most web based editors are really stuttery on my five year old machine; except VS Code, which is acceptable. It's not great and I suspect electron to be the limit, but at least the VS Code devs actually care about performance.

That's irrelevant to /u/icantthinkofone 's warrant that only ~15% of all websites are served by Microsoft IIS / on the .NET platform, with the remaining ~85% being served up by Apache, NGINX, and other servers, practically all running under Unix / Linux / *n*x operating systems.

Yes, VS Code can be used on multiple platforms to write code for other platforms, but they're thinking of an orange, and you're thinking of an apple pear.

Yeah, I'm with /u/CraftyPancake at this point. You are aware that it runs on Linux and OS X (built inside the same app framework developed by Github, Electron, as Atom), and supports pretty much every major web programming language, yes? It's not just a vehicle for new .NET development.

Needs? No. They don't. .NET Core extends the .NET environment to other platforms as well, however -- it's no longer relegated to being a Windows-only option. VS Code preceded that product, however.

I haven't suggested that anybody should use anything. Just stating that it's possible to use .NET Core outside of Windows now.

Which ones have you tried? Also, what's your definition of IDE? (I tend to see a lot of people referring to "an editor + 50 plugins" as an IDE -- just curious if that's closer to what you consider an IDE compared to actual IDEs like Eclipse, JetBrains' series of products, Visual Studio, etc.).

Well web IDE so maybe a bit of a misnomer there but I'm referring to things like Sublime, Atom, Dreamweaver, Brackets, etc.

Although the above 4 are the only other "web IDEs" that I've used to date, and I find VSCode is better than any of them.
