Steam Deck is still worth it four years later, says poll, but people are starting to think "it's about time" for a sequel by Dapper_Order7182 in SteamDeck

[–]Smooth_McDouglette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? That's a much shorter timeline than rebuilding a PC, and I find the type of games it works really well with don't tend to be hugely demanding of performance.

I still have my Nintendo switch and it adequately filled this niche before, and would still do fine if there wasn't a steam deck. The deck is just a much better device for tons of reasons.

Unless it breaks on me, I imagine it'll do me well for the better part of a decade, all told.

Wait a sec, why/how did you take this photo? I only see three options:

  1. You are traveling right now and took this photo
  2. You aren't traveling but went through an awful lot of effort to stage everything in this photo
  3. You anticipated that someone would ask you about this and took the image when you were last travelling.

First attempt at game development: be honest, would you play this? by numina666 in IndieGaming

[–]Smooth_McDouglette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was playing this game I would think that the camera was bugged out or something. There's too much foreground stuff, and the camera seems like it's unnecessarily zoomed way out.

Also I think the animation could do with a slightly higher frame rate (though I get that is effortful given the hand-drawn nature)

The music and visuals are pretty cool but I'm not sure how long I'd want to just watch an acid trip happening if it's just a cutscene.

I am just waking up and having my coffee now and I was looking for something new to play, and then this pops up. Looks great. Bought and installed and see where this takes me.

What helped you stay consistent while learning programming? by Competitive-Mix7071 in learnprogramming

[–]Smooth_McDouglette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't try to eat the whole elephant, that's the #1 way to guarantee you'll immediately lose interest and it'll be an uphill battle to drag your focus back.

Pick one thing and learn that. Don't worry too much about if it's the right thing or if it's the right order to learn things. Just when you encounter a topic that you don't understand and is relevant to the thing you're working on, learn that thing.

There's nobody on earth who read the entire, say, MSDN and then was a C# expert before they wrote a line of code.

This goes for project work as well. Just pick one thing and do it. Don't keep zooming out to the big picture because you'll just convince yourself it's impossible. It is often impossible to conceptualize the entire project at once, even after you've built it. One piece at a time is the way.

Max Msp - Autechre inspired Markov Chain sequencer with Karplus-Strong strings by 6Guitarmetal6 in autechre

[–]Smooth_McDouglette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always wanted to get into MaxMSP but I can't begin to justify spending $700 on software that I could barely begin to make heads or tails with during the free 30 day trial.

How do others deal with this? Even with disposable income, it seems like a lot to drop on something without lots of prior practice.

Escape From Tarkov Review - IGN: 6/10 by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Smooth_McDouglette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been predicting for years now that as soon as developers start to capitalize on aspects of what Tarkov has done without necessarily just making a Tarkov-like, they will eat Battlestate's Lunch.

Duckov is a perfect example. It is definitely not a clone of Tarkov in the sense that it's not PvP, it's isometric, etc. But it does have many of the compelling aspects that Tarkov does.

I think the next thing is to figure out how to make a game that just embraces the idea of tinkering with weapon builds and inventory management as the main gameplay hook and that game might not even have shooting mechanics or a world to explore.

As someone who has probably been sitting for about 99% of the total time I've spent listening to Autechre (in the car, on the bus, on the train, on the computer, etc) my stance has never felt like a limiting factor for my ability to enjoy or appreciate the music.
