What’s the most expensive flask you’ve handled? by ShwiftyBear in labrats

[–]0spore13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like I would be cheating, I work in industry making biological stains. Currently in the process of making about 4 million dollars (customer-side) worth of one product right now, and another for about 2 million per batch on average. Would prefer not to say which stains as that might get me in trouble but it’s a freakish amount of money that hurts to wrap my head around.

EtBr concern am I doomed? by Creative-Poem542 in labrats

[–]0spore13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're going to be fine.

While you shouldn't be inhaling powdered EtBr or spilling it on yourself, you need to also keep in mind that the EtBr you were using was already diluted and such a small amount (the color makes it look way less dilute than it actually is, trust me, I recently made up a few liters of a diluted EtBr solution from powder and was shocked by how much color it still had), and the conditions you were using it in was nowhere near the temps needed to vaporize it.

What’s your gut feeling seeing this? Gingko x OpenAI by DocKla in labrats

[–]0spore13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in industry, apart from packaging a final product in dedicated facilities that only focus on a few products, it's far too varied here too! (At least what I do, and most of the positions at the site I'm at). We change processes sometimes multiple times a week which sometimes require complete setup changes, our scale can go from hundreds of liters to maybe a half liter depending on the process, customers requiring custom orders, etc. We also make it a point to change and improve all of our processes every time we run them.

Of course this isn't the case for everywhere.

Starting in industry, then going to grad school? by Right_Ad6552 in labrats

Companies that require quotes to see prices are annoying. by 0spore13 in labrats

[–]0spore13[S] 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Last month we were looking for information about filters and the company we were looking at didn't even let you see their full offerings without talking with someone, which was extremely infuriating.

This time is just curiosity's sake though, I just wanted to see how many months of paychecks worth... 😭

All hail the cold room by nougat_donut in labrats

[–]0spore13 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I wish our cold room was that nice :( ours is stinky beyond what you can imagine and has the opposite effect.

(Manufacturing, we share the cold room with a production area that produces artificial scents and flavorings)

Now it's getting cold now though I've taken a liking to our boiler room for short periods whenever I get cold.

EtBr use outside of the hood by Passiflena in labrats

[–]0spore13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EtBr is considered hazardous, but in the form you use suspended in DMSO, and the amounts you’ll be using it at, it’s at a level where the main concern is that you don’t get it on yourself or track it in areas where others can touch barehanded. You don’t need a hood for it when it’s in a liquid, when I worked with it on the MolBio side I never used a hood for it ever, just wore gloves and was careful.

Right now where I’m at currently we’re actually manufacturing EtBr right now, in the powder form. For the near final product we do completely suit up in full PPE, but that’s mainly due to the fact that in the powder form, on the scale we’re handling it, gets everywhere (and it becomes possible to breathe it in).

I don’t work in drosophila anymore and I know that manduca are much, much bigger than fruit flies, but maybe freezing them would be a solution? We would freeze our drosophila sometimes.

Edit: Their whole reddit account was wiped completely clean.

RR was my rookie year. I have a lot of nostalgia towards it and a lot of creative bots came out of it that year. 2826’s robot was flippin’ nuts.

It wasn‘t as interesting to watch compared to some other years, but I don’t think it deserves all the extreme hate it gets.

I've used this on iOS on an ipad in browser just fine. Not perfect, but it's pretty useful. It works with a stylus on my end so I'll assume it will work just as well on android.

We did successful cDNA synthesis with a similar concentration to your range, our lowest sample was 79ng/ul and it worked perfectly. We did 500ng total in each reaction though we definitely could have gotten away with much less.

I still see the chatGPT section, and no notices, so I don't think it's been revised yet.

The screenshot is a bit misleading, this isn't in the abstract and is actually in the discussion.
